PERMORM'ARTE

1st National Performance Meeting

“Art has blurred the difference between art and life. Now let life blur the difference between life and art.” —John Cage

After inaugurating its Galeria Nova in Torres Vedras just over two years ago, the Communication and Culture Cooperative is taking on the (unavoidable?) risk of organizing “Perfom’Arte”—the 1st National Performance Meeting—a gamble and a challenge in terms of organization and also in terms of engaging with the public. For two weeks, the public will have the opportunity to access a range of activities from which it is hoped they will not leave indifferent: exhibitions, performances, video screenings, concerts, and conferences.

The Cooperative knows that it can never dare to be the sacred repository of art, but rather a point of intersection of people, gestures, and voices, and a center for the dissemination of facts, names, and worlds, permanently emphasizing within the routine a lucid fidelity to reality and the urgency of “free freedom.”

Thus, with the awareness that cooperation means working together, and with the certainty that whoever works always works for something and for someone, here we are, and thus we expose ourselves, so that, together, we can create, experience, and write, letter upon letter, our true cultural and human identity.

With Fernando Aguiar and Manoel Barbosa, the Communication and Culture Cooperative now delves deeper into some paths already opened. “Perform’Arte” will be a great synthesis of the vast activity of happenings, rituals, interventions, and performances by Portuguese artists. Could it result in a great space for analysis and discussion?

A necessary word is due to the experts who, in one way or another, support “Perform’Arte”: the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Civil Government of Lisbon, the Western Region Tourism Board, and, especially, the Municipality of Torres Vedras, both through its Culture and Tourism Services and its technical services. Here we publicly acknowledge these crucial contributions, without which our nomadic aspirations would have been extremely difficult to realize.
