António Valério, António Trindade, Assunção Venâncio, B’Zoze, Carlos Melo, Efrem, João Manuel Sarzedas, José Pedro Sobreiro, Leonel Trindade, Leonor Ferrão, Maria Amélia Guimarães, Maria Margariza Moreira, Mário Rui, Olga Mor, Rui Penteado, Virgilio Bizarro, XVisual communication, or rather, the transmission of ideas through images, is becoming an increasingly relevant factor in people's lives.
If it is said that the vast majority will still have difficulty accepting it, or that many still insist on denying the image the same importance as the word (spoken or written), we must, unfortunately, agree.
But this cannot leave us indifferent.
This exhibition, in which 18 people show four dozen works, is an attempt to propose a space for communication through images and the right to artistic expression that belongs to everyone.
It remains to be seen how these "artists" (mere mortals like all of us) and the public will accept the confrontation that dialogue always requires—because exhibiting a work is submitting it to criticism, and this is, today, free.
Various trends of self-affirmation through images and various qualities intersect in this "Salon of April". The different links that unite these works to their own motivations, and the different degrees of communicability they possess, reflect, as a whole, a (healthy) field of multiple experiences and contradictions—more than a selection of works, there was an opening of doors to varied proposals.
We believe that from the words spoken above, one can deduce the reason for integrating a visual arts exhibition into a set of activities to commemorate April 25th. The key ideas are there: dialogue, critique, multiplicity—freedom.
