Paisagens Desabitadas

Modernity is rarely associated with ruins. Instead, the city has imposed on contemporary minds ancient and enchanting monumental structures; a world of archaeological dreams like those found on the very typical tourist route. However, never have so many ruins been produced and rendered redundant as today: closed shopping malls, abandoned industrial sites, destroyed cities, empty apartment buildings, and dead capitalist palaces.

Amidst the city's noise, there are spaces that are strangely silent and forgotten – abandoned and empty urban spaces. The impression we get from these spaces causes a certain discomfort in our daily commute. They are spaces that grapple with time, or rather, with the times of the contemporary city. It's a ghostly word of decaying modern debris, mostly left unconcerned. This marginalization is a concern of the "uninhabited landscapes" project, which explores the forgetting of ruins and leads me to question how much I belong to the city and whether I can judge it or participate in its dynamics.
