The idea that painting is limited to flat spaces and is averse to the "illusionism" of the third dimension may have represented an enlightening advance on the misconceptions surrounding this language, or it may—the idea itself—have constituted a reductive and perfectly dispensable misconception.

(...) Marília Viegas's painting seems (and appears) formulated around a notion of space in depth, starting from architectures that do not exist. What this space proposes to us is a kind of gaze in a "fixed plane" into perspectives where the memory of reality is profoundly transformed into a memory of fiction. Each plane has already been a journey, each architecture has already been history.

When someone stated that painting is a mental thing, they would have come close to concluding that all painting is metaphysical. The “illustration” of this nuance, or of this way of thinking that the pictorial image can suggest to us, is contained (in a certain way, obviously) in this series of paintings and drawings by M. V. Here, in effect, the finite and flat appearances of the painting serve above all to confront us with the dimension of infinity that we will never be able to fully grasp.
