Desertar

Catarina Sobreiro

These are paintings of a return. The return to a place and a time that had stopped, like a journey where inevitable detours postpone an essential destination. This place and this time, which here take on brief landscape forms, are more somber than bright, cold and damp, where only sometimes can one guess at the possible arrival at a desired place. The quietude of these uninhabited territories calmly leads to an idea of death, sometimes diverted by a color or light that seems to promise a happy and vibrant rest.

“Deserting” hints at some kind of hope, but also reveals confrontation and ambiguity: from the desire for calm and silence, there remains the discomfort of seeing them materialized in the painting, becoming, in my eyes, metaphors for eras after catastrophe. The ambiguity of continuing to pursue, in some way, the forms of beauty, despite knowing that they carry the intermittently announced death of painting.
