Charivari

Charivari is a work by José Eduardo Real about the Torres Vedras Carnival that goes far beyond documentary. Without excessive concern for formal structure, the richness of the work lies in the way the author entered the night and constructed the images with which he gives us an intimate version of the moment. Using the subjective experiences of the revelers as a stage, the author creates, from his own symbolic universe, a unique visual construction. Using black and white, blur, overlapping planes or the density of noise, he opens up different paths of interpretation, intense, visceral and dramatic, in an alternating movement between faces and details, in a search for the meaning that is the key to the stories.

It is a silent work about the uproar, the confusion and the chaos that creates in us the sensation of being there and (also) losing our breath. José Eduardo Real's photography, used here as a tool for signifying an annual event, has the power to transport us to environments that are simultaneously public and private, giving rise to untimely and disparate images with a strong humanistic component.
