A Mecânica da Ausência

Carla Cabanas
01.10.2016 — 26.11.2016

“I have a feeling that inside you somewhere, there’s someone nobody knows about.” Alfred Hitchcock

Carla Cabanas' work reinterprets time and memory through an idea of loss and saturation. By cutting the support and marking an absence, or adding other cutouts, the artist modifies the history that each image retains, transforming a suspended time into something alive, undefined, and fantastical. Carla Cabanas composes a palimpsest of references that opens space for another perspective. A perspective that translates a complex, stratified, and non-linear time, responding more to emotion than to the rationality of chronological succession.

In a dense way, but without a fixed body or time, the cadence of her projections transports us to something we recognize and feel close to. Something that is not entirely tangible, but where we identify some past of old photographs that is vaguely familiar to us.
