SEE: UNDERSTAND AND ACT

“To see,” said Eluard in one of his clearest, most direct poems, “is to understand and to act./And to see is to be or to disappear.” Just as the painter is not a mechanical recorder of the external aspects of nature, the spectator is also not a mechanical verifier of the painter's work regarding the fulfillment of a previously and definitively established pattern. To create is to reinvent, to begin everything again from the concrete conditions of each moment, to impose on nature and on oneself a new will, or a new aspect of the will, to refuse death, to constantly affirm and dignify man against all and through all. (…)

(…) To appreciate a painting is to establish successful relationships between the material means available to the painter at a given time and the human, ideological, and sensitive content that he, albeit indirectly, always expresses with them.
